What type of consumer laser can cut through things?
The short answer: no consumer laser can do that.
It is not legal in the United States to sell bare lasers capable of cutting to the consumer. Lasers contained inside of an apparatus that protects users and bystanders from exposure to the beam may be legal.
You might find bare lasers on eBay or Amazon because enforcement of those laws is currently lax. As more weapons junkies acquire them and use them, causing injury to third parties, the law enforcement will be stepped up.
Recently some picosecond blue lasers have appeared for removing skin tags and tattoos. Immediately people starting causing severe eye injuries by accidentally looking in a mirror or a reflection from a piece of plastic. These have slipped through the cracks and as law suits are stepped up, they will be difficult for the consumer to obtain.
